Energy Data Logging

We are regularly called to investigate why our customers have high electricity bills.

Initially it is recommended by the Electricity suppliers to Carry out a Creep Test, and if the Electricity Meter is at fault then they will replace it free of charge.  Creep Testing is a simple task to be carried out by you our  customer. Follow through on this article so you can perform the initial basic tests yourself.

Recently we attended a lovely property and installed the energy data logging equipment.

Nick & his wife  (our clients were amazed) at our findings, and were able to take action.

Energy Logger - Bright Spark Electrician

Our proceedures are:

To set up and install data logging equipment to your incoming meter tails to your property.

The Equipment is installed on a temporary basis, close to your consumer unit / service head. Which will be needed to be plugged into a nearby Power point to allow the machine (although with Back up Battery) to run.

A return visit is required to uninstall, and draw down the data to produce Graphs & Data to identify Current Draw to your property, showing peak demand, from this data we can with your assistance identify what is on at certain times of the day, in order to make an informed choice, which could be swapping out your whole electrical installation to single phase supply, and a consumer unit upgrade.

The equipment is left with you for 3 weeks to ensure there is sufficient information.

Two x one hour visits are required

First visit: Install / Set up & instructions to carry out the personal monitoring.

Second visit: Decommission the equipement, discuss your findings, prior to returning to our offices to down load the Data, to put into a formative document.

During the time that the energy data logging equipment is installed and running, you the customer is to run your own separate monitoring  tests, including switching off circuits at the consumer unit, and individually powering up just one circuit at a time over 15 minute periods.

This information will be needed to noted down as to which circuit is being monitored, and which circuit on your consumer unit is on in order to tally up your figures, with the Data downloaded from the Incoming power.

The data recorded on the energy logging machine, Notes figures down every five minutes, 24/7.

This data will be needed to verify which high-powered equipment could be running.

From these results, you will see periods of high current draw, where there could be time switches and thermostats which click on and off, it will show the amount of voltage at the property, the total kilowatts used in short periods, and the high amperage draw as well.

From our data, including a spreadsheet, and various graphs, combined with your personal testing of the circuits, you should be able to make an informed choice as to what is happening.

At Nicks property, it was discovered that there were hot water tanks running constantly, heated towel rails running, and air-conditioning units.

Nick took swift action, by putting a lot of time switches to varioous devices around his property, along with severly chastising his teenage and 20 something offspring, in relation to the efficient use of power in the property.

Measurements can be taken across single, and three phase electricity supplies

I had a number of light fittings that weren't working and, on a recommendation from a friend, called Bright Spark. Karen called in to evaluate and price the work the same day and sent one of her colleagues, to carry it out before the end of the week. It was a very impressive response and the work was done to an excellent standard. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Bright Spark, and it's reassuring to know such a reliable firm exists the next time I need an electrician.
