Creep Test

Concerned about a high electricity bill?

A Creep Test can help determine whether your electricity meter is faulty.

The test works by checking if your meter continues to record consumption even when all power is switched off. If the meter keeps increasing — or "creeping" — with the main fuse off, this could indicate a defect or mis-registered meter. A properly functioning meter should not move, or move by only 1–2 units (residual power) over 15–20 minutes.

Typical Electric Meter

How to Perform a Creep Test

  1. Turn off the power — Switch off all electricity at your main fuse box/consumer unit.
  2. Record the reading — Take a photo or note the current meter reading.
  3. Wait — Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Re-check — Take another reading. If the numbers have increased by more than 1–2 units, your meter may be faulty.

What to Do if Your Meter is Creeping

If the meter continues to turn with the power off, contact your energy supplier to report a faulty meter. The supplier will typically send an engineer to inspect it, and if found to be faulty, they will replace it free of charge.

What if the Meter Doesn't Move?

If the meter does not move during the test, it is likely that a specific appliance is consuming high power. In this case, a Load Test is recommended — checking the meter while turning appliances on one by one.

Bright Spark Electrical Services can carry out this Load Test using specialist Energy Usage Data Logging equipment. Find out more here.

We couldn’t single out any one person as they’re all great. Joe was very helpful today and made a lovely neat job of the work. We wouldn’t use any other company. Best wishes. Carolyn

Karen and her team of electricians are super responsive, very professional, and I love how they book an exact time and appointment with a follow-up confirmation text and email. I feel very confident in the quality of workmanship and know they will go out of their way to fix any electrical issues in my home!

I just wanted to say how amazing your customer service is. You are the first (and only?) trade company that communicates and is efficient from my experience. I really appreciate texts, and emails giving me updates. It means I don’t have the frustration of having to stay in for the electrician all day and waste my time. You run an excellent service. Your electrician was great and very quick. We will definitely be using you again.

You just saved us the biggest headache ever; after months of electrical problems ( now resolved), we had a ‘no power situation’. After checking circuit boards, switches etc we were at a complete loss. Read your piece above (after Googling ‘circuit board switches up, but no power‘) about RCD switch and resetting (didn’t know what an RCD was), and after 8 hours sleep dreaming of circuit boards and 2 minutes of contemplation, and re-reading your advice,I totally nailed it. Brilliant tutorial, many thanks. Susanne (I am neither young nor savvy with anything technical)

Phil, from Bright Sparks arrived promptly, was really polite, cracked on with his job and gave us a really good brief on what he'd done and why it was needed which was then followed up with a thorough report. Bright Sparks have been absolutely superb and not only are they saved in my phone but also I'd recommend them to friends and family. Thanks guys. P.s. you were up front and transparent about costs too.
