The Safe Isolation Procedure: Step-by-Step Guide

Safe isolation involves two stages:

Switching OFF the Supply and Proving Dead.

BS 7671 and EWR emphasize a structured 7-step process, scalable from domestic sockets to high-voltage systems.

  1. Identify suitable point(s) for isolation: Plan based on work type—check circuit labels, drawings, or create isolation diagrams. For domestic sockets, it's informal (e.g., note breaker for kids' gaming); for complex systems, develop switching schedules.
  2. Carry out the safe isolation process: Use the device's off function (e.g., press 'off' on an ACB, rack out to isolate).
  3. Secure the point of isolation: Lock off with a safety lock; retain the key. Place notices warning others.
  4. Prove dead: Test your voltage indicator on a known live source to confirm it works.
  1. Test all live conductors and exposed metalwork at the point of work.
  2. Re-test your voltage indicator on a known live source again to ensure it still operates correctly.
  3. Only proceed when you are fully satisfied the circuit is dead.
  1. Discharge stored energy:
Some equipment (e.g. capacitors in power supplies, LED drivers, EV chargers, PV inverters) can hold a dangerous charge even after isolation. Where relevant, safely discharge this stored energy before touching terminals.
  2. Apply earthing/short-circuiting where required:
In higher-voltage or industrial environments, temporary protective earthing may be used so that if the circuit is accidentally re-energised, protective devices will operate immediately. This is generally an industrial practice rather than a domestic one, but it illustrates how structured and controlled safe isolation must be.
  3. Check the isolation remains effective:
Before and during work, especially on larger or more complex systems, verify that no alternative supplies (for example from generators, PV systems, or battery storage) can feed the circuit you’re working on.

For typical household and light commercial work, an NICEIC  registered electrician will follow a simplified but structured version of this process.

At Bright Spark Electrical Seerivces, our engineers always follow a documented safe isolation procedure before touching your wiring – no exceptions.

I was really impressed with the work done for me by Bright Sparks. It is lovely that they are local to me in Hildenborough and grateful that they could fit me in at short notice. The repairs were done quickly and easily by Charlie and the whole thing coordinated by Karen who kept me informed every step of the way. Well done Bright Sparks!

You just saved us the biggest headache ever; after months of electrical problems ( now resolved), we had a ‘no power situation’. After checking circuit boards, switches etc we were at a complete loss. Read your piece above (after Googling ‘circuit board switches up, but no power‘) about RCD switch and resetting (didn’t know what an RCD was), and after 8 hours sleep dreaming of circuit boards and 2 minutes of contemplation, and re-reading your advice,I totally nailed it. Brilliant tutorial, many thanks. Susanne (I am neither young nor savvy with anything technical)

"I have had Bright Sparks at my property twice in the last six months to complete some electrical work. I have been blown away by the innovative efficient way I am communicated with the efficiency and ease of the process. The work has been carried out to a more than satisfactory standard and I found it to be extremely competitively priced. It is by far the best experience I have had with any service provider in forever. Thanks guys."
